Unsweetened Applesauce Is The Wonder Substitute In The Kitchen

You can quite easily cut the fatty calories in your baking and cooking by just substituting some of your usual ingredients. By discovering a few low-fat/no-fat basic cooking tips you can still make the meals which your family has always loved without sacrificing the flavor or quality but still delivering to them a much healthier alternative. One of my family’s favorites has always been banana bread. Although absolutely delicious the recipe calls for ½ cup of oil. I just could not stand the idea of all that fat going into their bodies and worried about my family’s health so I just quit baking the bread. This almost caused an open rebellion but I was more worried with their health than their complaints. Buck luckily for them I found out that instead of using the ½ cup of oil in the banana bread a ½ cup of unsweetened applesauce can be used as a substitute. And, incredibly, the banana bread is just as moist and tasty and no one in my family can tell the difference from the old recipe. Now, I am back to baking the banana bread they love so much and I am personally very happy in knowing they are now eating a much healthier snack.

Also I was startled to find out that applesauce can also be used as a substitute for butter in many recipes. By using the same amount of applesauce in the recipe, for example replace ¼ cup butter for a ¼ applesauce will not affect the flavor of the dish at all and at the same time providing lowering the fat content in the final product.

Reducing The Fat One Dish At A Time

Something else I found among basic cooking tips that I had never realized is that you can substitute a ½ cup of evaporated fat free milk for a ½ cup of heavy cream. This is another great way to reduce calories as well as a much healthier ingredient. I can now be sure my family is eating much healthier while still getting all the tasty dishes that they have always loved.
